Scrapbooking can be an interesting hobby, even while on the road. It can keep you busy during those down times, not to mention give you a creative outlet. And wouldn’t it be nice to have a way to create unique and inexpensive gifts for your loved ones?
Scrapbooking expert Megan Burnett from Helium.com has some suggestions to help you get you started in one of the fastest growing hobbies in the U.S.
First, buy a scrapbooking album. Be prepared to pay at least $25 for a decent one. You should be able to find reasonably priced, good quality albums at Wal-Mart or Hobby Lobby. If you want something particular, you could always spend a bit more money and purchase one at a scrapbooking store.
Start collecting interesting, every day things that you would normally throw away that you think would look neat in a scrapbook. Examples include magazines, postcards, advertisements from the mail, old wrapping paper, holiday ribbon, etc.
Find some sort of box you can use to organize your materials. If your scrapbook is for a particular event, or person, sort out the pictures you wish to use. It’s also helpful to put them in chronological order, or to sort them in a way that will be beneficial to how you plan on setting up the scrapbook.
Keep an eye out for particular items that relate to the subject material you are scrapbooking. Don’t assume that just scrapbooking stores carry scrapbooking supplies. Try dollar stores, yard sales, even eBay. Sometimes, the best way to find unique items is by exploring a bit. You can also check out books or magazines on scrapbooking for ideas. Pictures can give you great ideas on layouts, colors, etc.
Once you have made the decision to make a scrapbook, or to scrapbook in general, your collection of supplies will increase and you will develop your own style over time. Be patient. Don’t work on the scrapbook unless you’re in the mood. Try not to put time limits on projects - just work on it as you are inspired to do so. This makes for the best work.
Even though it would be ideal to join a scrapbooking class to get you started, it’s not necessary. All it takes is a little creativity to turn your individual pieces of “art” into cherished treasures for years to come!
