Study Claims Saline Nasal Wash Helps Kids Fight Cold, Flu

A new report is claiming that a saline nasal wash solution made from processed seawater may help children who are battling a cold.

According to the Washington Post, the report, produced by researchers from Brno in the Czech Republic, said this solution could help by reducing symptoms associated with the common cold, as well as reducing the risk of recurrent respiratory infections.

For their study, the researchers divided more than 400 children between 6 and 10 who had the flu into two groups. One group received the nasal wash solution and the other received that plus standard flu medication.

Patients were followed closely to track any possible changes, and the researchers noticed that as time passed, the children who received the nasal wash had less of a runny or stuffy nose.

“Nasal irrigation with isotonic [balanced] saline solutions seems effective in such health conditions and is often used in a variety of indications as an adjunctive treatment,” said the study.  “Although saline nasal wash is currently mentioned in several guidelines, scientific evidence of its efficacy is rather poor.”

Another benefit the study noted was the participants tolerated the nasal wash well and there were no side effects.
