Schneider creates fuel-hauling unit from Katrina recovery work

Schneider National, a giant truckload and intermodal carrier in Green Bay has added fuel-hauling capabilities to its bulk division.

The new service stems from the emergency fuel supply chain Schneider managed for the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Department of Transportation during Hurricane Katrina recovery.

George Grossardt, vice president and general manager of Schneider National Bulk, said the firm hauled more than 1.5 million gallons of diesel fuel for the recovery work, while also providing drivers, supervision and dispatch services.

Schneider said its research into the fuel-hauling industry revealed aging fleets around the country, new environmental regulations and fuel supply capacity issues. The company is launching the service in the Gulf Coast region, stretching from New Orleans to Houston, and the upper Midwest. Schneider will also explore expanding its fuel-hauling capacity to the eastern portion of the United States
