Horizon partners with SmartWay

Horizon Lines has joined the SmartWay Transport Partnership and earned the highest fuel-efficiency and environmental-performance rating from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The SmartWay program is collaboration between the EPA and the freight industry designed to increase energy efficiency while significantly reducing greenhouse-gas emissions and air pollution.

“We have worked for several years to reduce pollution and improve energy efficiency in our operations,” says John Keenan, president of Horizon. “We are proud to earn the highest performance ranking by EPA for our efforts and look forward to making a difference in the future.”

SmartWay aims to achieve fuel savings of up to 150 million barrels of fuel per year. It brings together freight shippers, trucking companies, railroads, logistics companies, and trade and professional associations to pursue mutually beneficial efficiencies that result in emissions reductions and other environmental improvements.

Horizon is based in Charlotte, NC and operates a fleet of U.S.-flag containerships and port terminals linking the continental United States to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam and Micronesia.
