Are You In Over Your Head?

It’s a sign of the times. Americans with credit card debt. While credit can be very helpful when it’s used wisely, more and more people are getting in over their heads and their financial futures are taking a detour.

You may make your monthly payments on time, but is that enough? Do you pay just the minimum payments? Take a look at these warning signs that you could be heading in the wrong direction:

Warning Signs of Debt Problems

1. You make only the minimum payments on your credit card bills.
2. You do not have any savings.
3. You use credit cards for things you once bought with cash, such as groceries.
4. You have more than two or three major credit cards.
5. You use more and more of your total income to pay off your debts.
6. After you pay your credit card bill, you increase the balance by the same amount (or more) the following month.
7. You’ve reached your credit limits, or you’re close to doing so.
8. You write checks hoping that you’ll be able to cover them by the time they clear the bank.
9. You’re not sure of the total amount you owe on your debts.
10. You take out cash advances on your credit cards to pay other bills.
11. You’ve attempted to make a purchase with your credit card and it was declined.
12. You’ve been denied credit.
13. You bounce checks.
14. You get calls from collectors.
15. You lie to your spouse or other family members about your spending or hide credit card statements from them.

If some of these signs sound familiar, you could be in financial trouble. But, it’s not too late to turn things around. The key is to act soon.

For help managing debt, look for help from a non-profit organization. Beware of debt-consolidation services that charge fees.
