The American Red Cross has kicked off a new promotion to try and increase the number of blood donors during the summer by giving away a chance to win free gas.

Those who help out by donating blood will be entered into a drawing to win free gas among other gifts. The hope is that the American Red Cross will be able to keep up with needed blood donations through the summer.

The idea is to try and keep the high level of blood donations coming in through the summer months, as the supply usually goes down because they are not able to go to high schools, etc. to access donors.

Many people do it just to help out and hopefully save a life. With gas prices now nearing and exceeding $4 in some places around the U.S., this could be another incentive to try to give some blood, in return for some gas.

The Red Cross says they will need around 23,000 people to donate blood through Labor Day to maintain the supply needed throughout the summer.
